Nearly three-quarters of new cars sold in Nepal are electric, old battery management a worry

As Nepal's electric vehicle market expands rapidly, managing batteries that have reached the end of their life is set to become a major challenge in the coming years.

About 73 percent of new cars sold in the country in 2025 were electric.

International studies show Nepal has become the world's second-largest market after Norway in terms of the share of electric vehicles in new car sales.

The goal of reducing air pollution and petroleum imports, along with rising hydropower generation and tax concessions, has driven this expansion.

Experts have warned that unless the collection, reuse and recycling of old batteries is arranged in time, this very alternative for clean transport could later add to environmental risks.
