Trump names Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff

US President Donald Trump has appointed his longtime adviser Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff. Miller will replace Susie Wiles and take up the new role from Monday.

Trump made the decision following the Republican Party's defeat in Tuesday's midterm elections. Announcing the appointment on social media, Trump called Miller one of his most trusted advisers.

Miller said on X that he would put his full strength into supporting the president and defending the republic. He is regarded as an aggressive political strategist and a proponent of strict immigration policy, and has long advocated for expanding presidential authority.

Trump had said earlier this week that he was willing to work with Democrats, who have gained strength in Congress. But bringing a hardline figure into a top White House post is being seen as preparation for political confrontation rather than cooperation. Congress is also preparing to investigate various decisions made by the Trump administration.
